12/10/09- Notes from this week

This week we watched a movie about the lost boys of Sudan.  There is a war in Sudan and the boys have to get moved to camps from Ethiopia to Kenya.  Not only did they have to separate from their families but they also had to walk to ethiopia from sudan and from ethiopia to kenya.  They stayed in these camps for a several amount of years.  Then hundreds of lost boys got moved to america and had to adjust to the way americans live.  Some of them did very well, but some of them had a hard time and didn't do as well as the others. Most of the lost boys that we followed in the movie reunited with their families except for one of them.

  • 27,000 young men set out for Ethiopia.
  • A camp was formed- Refugee camp, they stayed in this camp in Ethiopia for 3 years.
  • Kids starved
  • They had to flee from Ethiopia to Kenya because the government didn't want the lost boys to stay in Ethiopia anymore.
  • John Bull was in charge of 1,200 kids when he was only 13 years old.
  • Kakuma Refugee camp-Kenya
  • When they arrived in Kenya 27,000 young men reduced down to 12,000.
  • None of these kids have parents.
  • after a few years hundreds of lost boys got deported to America.
  • they moved to 23 states.
  • The lost boys that we followed went to Syracuse and Pittsburgh.

In africa the average person doesn't make it to 50.
It’s the only region that has gotten poorer in the last 30 years
They are still slipping further behind other countries
There TFR is increasing but there mortality rate is decreasing
Genocide is a big problem between nations in africa
Genocide- killing
killing, slaughter, massacre, ethnic cleansing,
The countries fight with each other and slaughter whoever is left behind.
The average person there is 6 times poorer than poor people in america.

1. Nicole Kidman was th Narrator of the Movie.
2. There are 3 countries that are the settings of this movie, they include Sudan, Kenya, and the United States of America.
3. The main characters are Panther, John Bull, and Daniel.
4. Refugee- someone who has to leave their country because of danger.
5. IDP?
6. The Lost Boys.
7. They moved from Sudan to Ehtiopia, Ethiopia to Kenya, Kenya to America.
8. The lives of the lost boys is different from my life because they have no parents, they also only have one meal a day or sometimes no meal.  Where as most of us have parents and we have 3 meals a day.  They also have no home and they don't shower or drink clean water.  We do the total opposite of them.
9. The boys might have trouble keeping up with the bills, the cleaning habits might be a problem too.  They also don't know how to cook when they arrive and they have to adjust.  It may take3 more than three months.

environmental geography
north americans have transformed the land
-wheat, cattle, horses are not native, but produced
U.S. is the third largest consumer of water
- china #1, india #2
- US city dwellers consume 175 gallons daily
-drinking, cooking, showers,....
-water quality is becoming a problem.

Air modification (pollution)
-sources indistries, utilities, automobiles
Acid rain
-formed when sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide get into the water system.
-damages forests, poisons lakes, kills fish, erodes stonework.

Population and Settlement
-in 1492 columbus sailed the ocean blue
-before tat indigenous people lived in the americas. due to lack of written records estimates cary widely
-your texts says 3.2 mill. in US plus 1.2 mill. in Canada
1491: new revelations of the americas before columbus says 90 to 112 mill. including south america
in any case, 95% of them died after the europeas arrived (warfare and disease, especially smallpox)

Canada and the U.S. is in North America
Highly mobile- the population moves around a lot
Megalopolis- area containing large cities
Incredibly culturally diverse, people have come from all over the world to come into this country.
Economic diversity - we can make money in many different ways

Population and settlement-
People usually move because of job opportunities
They move from rural to urban
Urban communities have more job opportunities.
Over all population is growing
People were living here before the Europeans showed up but what happened when the Europeans came?

Cuteral coherence and diversity-
spanish speaking immigrants are making a huge difference
everybody is welcome here,
everybody brings there cultures here and is free to live there lives
in the 1900s nearly 100 million foreigners entered the united states anually.
most of the population lives west os the mississippi river.

economic and social development:
north america has a lot of resources
we have a lot of stuff that many countries would love to have

the Region-
U.S. and Canada
335 mill. people
culterally diverse
rich in natural resources
Ultra globalized
the last remaining global superpower (U.S.)- we could take over every country in the world

Cultural Coherence and Diversity

Cultural Coherence and Diversity

In our world today, 43 million immigrants are living in the United States.  Having 43 million immigrants in our country means that cultural pluralism remains strong.  Many of the careers here probably have many foreign people working for them.  When you walk down the street in the suburbs, everywhere you look you will probably see and hear Hispanics, Asians, and many other people.  We wouldn’t have as many people and also as many jobs if we didn’t have as much immigrants pouring into our country today.

In the United States, the net migration rate is 4.0, which is fairly high.  By the 1900s immigration started to peak at about 800,500 people annually, but by the mid 1930s things slowed down because of World War II.  After World War II, immigration surged back up to 900,000 people annually.  Between the 1920 and 1970 most immigrants came from Canada and Latin America.  Today, Asia and Africa have the most people pouring into the United States.  About 11% of Mexico’s population now lives in the United States.

In conclusion, the net migration rate is continuing to rise and most likely will not decrease.  Our nation is the fifth Spanish speaking country in the world and I wouldn’t be surprised if we ever become the third in the next decade or two because of our neighbor, Latin America.  Many of the Latin Americans come into our country having Spanish as their only language and by the time they have kids and their kids go to school their second language will be English.  Our nation is very unique from others, but there are many other countries having their net migration rates rise.  We aren’t alone.

Global Warming

Global Warming

Some scientists and many people are quite convinced that people are the main cause of global warming. I also agree with this theory because every day we contribute to green house gases. How do we contribute every day? We drive our cars, we heat our homes during the winter, some houses are poorly insolated, we smoke cigarettes, and many other reasons! There are 5 most deadly effects of global warming

1. Ice caps melting, which makes the sea level rise and will result in major cities going under water.

2. Economic consequences, which are hurricanes and diseases that need billions of dollars to repair and cure.

3. Increased probability and intensity of droughts and heat waves, other areas of the earth will suffer serious heat waves and droughts, especially Africa.

4. Warmer waters and more hurricanes, as the ocean’s temperature rises, the hurricanes strength level will increase.

5. Spread of disease, as the northern countries warm up, the disease spreading insects will migrate north and bring more diseases to the north.

Even though many people including myself believe in global warming, many people still believe that it is a myth. Some people didn’t get the education to really understand global warming, therefore they don’t believe that global warming is occurring. Another argument of global warming would be that people are against global warming or they don’t want to believe that global warming is occurring. In my theory, global warming is and has been occurring for many years and we are going to have to do a lot more to slow it down.

hurricane katrina

The water flooded into houses and all over New Orleans

Some people didn’t eat for days after the hurricane

Thunder storms draw heat from the oceans surface and that's how hurricanes get started

It starts as a tropical depression

On aug. 29, 2005 katrina hit new orleans

The innerstorm can change mintue by minute

Catagories 1-5, 5 bring the worst.

A hurricane covers as big as a football field every hour

6:10 am katrina strikes land

A 15 ft wave hits new orleans

The levees failed

75% of new orleans was underwater

It took over a month to pump out all the water

Over 100,000 stayed home for the hurricane, they relied on the levees

Why did the levee fail?

Pressure made the walls vulnerbale

In all of the oceans, the temperatures have rised which makes the hurricanes stronger

ADD ON:::STEP 4 OF THE QUIZ

STEP FOUR:
One third of Mexicans said that they would move to the U.S.A. if they could. Some Mexicans said that they thought their life here in our country was worse than theirs in Mexico. “Many Mexicans want to migrate here even though they are well informed about the hardships they could face and are expecting conditions at home to improve.” Some Mexicans tried to hop the border illegally, but got sent back home because they got caught.  About 4 in 10 mexicans either have relatives or friends that live in the United States, therefor they have connections to the U.S.  In Mexico, it looks like the net migration rate would be a negative number because most of the mexicans are imigrating into the U.S.

Test 10/15

'“On my honor, I have neither given nor received unauthorized aid on this graded academic work. I am a person of integrity and I do not cheat.” Agree to this statement by typing your name here: Taylor DiPaula

Globalization is the increasing interconnectedness of people and places through converging processes of economic, political, and culteral change. Those who are pro-globalization believe that wealth will “trickle down” from rich countries to poor countries. They also believe it will spread the benefits of new ideas and new technologies to all nations. One organization that loans money to nations so they can invest in business is the international monetary fund. On the other hand, those who are anti-globalization say it is not fair, because the richest 20% of the world’s people consume 86% of the world’s resources, resulting in between “haves” and “have nots.”

Use the CIA Factbook to answer the following questions: In Afghanistan the life expectancy is 44 years old, the infant mortality rate is 151.95 deaths per 1000 live births, the literacy rate is 28.1%, and the TFR is 6.53. In Australia the life expectancy is 81 years old, the infant mortality rate is 4.75 deaths per 1000 live births, the literacy rate is 99% and the TFR is 1.78.

We often categorize nations as being “developed” or “developing” nations. Vietnam and Mexico would be considered developing nations; Japan and Canada are developed nations.

The current world population is over 6 billion people. The number that measures how many children the average woman in a nation will bear is known as the Total fertility rate, which is abbreviated as TFR. When this number is exactly 2.1, then the population stays the same; if it’s higher, the population goes up, and if it’s lower, the population decreases. The population is growing fastest in 2 nations.

A population pyramid that is shaped just like a pyramid -- wide on the bottom and narrow at the top -- shows a country whose population is growing.  If it is shaped more like a vase or a soda bottle, that nation’s population is growing slowly.  Young people are found at the bottom of the pyramid, and older are found on the left hand side.

When discussing migration, people who are entering a country are known as immigrants, and people who are leaving a country are known as emigrants.  People leave their country for many reasons. An example of a push force is civil strife, and an example of a pull force is better economic opportunity. If a nation’s net migration rate is a negative number, it means more people are leaving the country than are arriving.

STEP THREE: In a short, well-written essay, answer ONE of the following questions:
OR 3) The demographic transition graph describes the changes in birthrates and death rates that a country experiences over time. Describe the changes that the United States has gone through by using the demographic transition diagram.
New essay:
(I copied and pasted the better essay on here)
One third of Mexicans said that they would move to the U.S.A. if they could.
